Situated along raging rivers, amongst rolling hills and in peaceful valleys, West Virginia’s golf courses offer a challenging game with stunning backdrops.

Many of these courses are designed by masters of the sport, such as Palmer, Nicklaus, Cobb, Jones, and Player.

Located in the New River – Greenbrier Valley region lies the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, offering three championship golf courses.

The Old White Course was built in 1913 and this summer played host to the Greenbrier Classic for the second year running as part of the PGA Tour FedEx Cup Series.

The resort’s second course, The Greenbrier, redesigned by Jack Nicklaus, is listed as a National Historic landmark for its classical architecture, while the third, the Meadows Course, was designed by Bob Cupp in 1999.

The Resort at Glade Springs is also located in the region and boasts three championship courses. Designed by noted architect George Cobb, the Cobb Course features rolling fairways framed by mature forest leading up to some of the largest greens and bunkers.

The recently opened Woodhaven Course offers dramatic views overlooking Glade’s Creek and mountainous terrain while the Stonehaven Course offers non-returning nines.

The Stonehaven Course uses the mature forests and extraordinary mountains to create a challenging course.

The Central part of West Virginia offers three highly acclaimed courses. The Gary Player-designed Raven Golf Club at Snowshoe Mountain in the Potomac Highlands region is ranked the second best public course in the state.

Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains is Canaan Valley Resort, offering an 18-hole championship course designed by Geoffrey Cornish. The new and upscale state park resort, Stonewall Resort, is located in the Mountain Lakes region of central West Virginia and boasts an 18-hole Arnold Palmer signature course.

Located in the northern area in Wheeling is Oglebay Resort, offering 54 holes of challenging and award-winning golf as well as a variety of new and historic accommodation. The resort has two championship courses, one designed by Arnold Palmer and one by Robert Trent Jones.

On the Eastern side is the Woods Resort, featuring two 18-hole courses, while minutes away sits Cacapon Resort State Park and the Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed golf course.

2,300 feet above sea level and set between two mountain ranges, this golf course uses the foothills at the base of the ridge. Also in this region lies the secludedLocust Hill Golf Course, just outside historic Charles Town

West Virginia’s golf courses can be accessed from direct flights into Washington DC with a further one hour drive to the eastern side of the state or connecting domestic flights to West Virginia’s capital city of Charleston.
