Sakkara

Lesser known Sakkara is a vast burial ground in Egypt, located some 30 km south of modern Cairo. Its exotic name is said to derive from an ancient Egyptian funerary god. Serving as the cemetery for the Ancient Egyptian capital Memphis, Sakkara is home to Egypt’s oldest pyramid, the Pyramid of Djoser, built in 2650 BC. A visit to Egypt would be incomplete without learning the history of this magnificent structure, considered to be the earliest large-scale cut stone construction. Sakkara remained an important complex for non-royal burials and cult ceremonies for over 3,000 years, into Ptolemaic and Roman times.
