Opening Ghent City Museum (STAM). The story of the city. October 9th 2010

Ghent, Bijloke site

Once the renovation of Bijloke Abbey and the addition of a contemporary reception building are complete, Ghent's new city museum - known as the STAM - opened its doors on October 9th.

The story of the city is explained by means of carefully-chosen pieces from the extensive 'Ghent collection', shown in a historical setting using a contemporary approach - rather like Ghent itself.

A chronological trail brought to life by means of multimedia applications leads visitors on a journey through Ghent's past, providing insight into the modern-day city and even a glimpse of the future. Thus the city's many layers will become readable.

As well as the permanent circuit which leads through the ancient abbey, the STAM mounts temporary exhibitions in the adjoining monastery. These take 'urbanity' as their theme and are inspired by topical subject matter.

STAM will be the springboard for a perfect day out in Ghent, visiting its cultural heritage. The STAM is located on the Bijloke site, a green oasis close to the city centre. The former Bijloke Abbey houses one of the finest medieval refectories in Western Europe, with unique wall paintings that pre-date Van Eyck.
