West Virginia’s Lewisburg voted America’s Coolest Small Town

The small town of Lewisburg in West Virginia has this year been voted America's Coolest Small Town.

The picture-perfect main street offers the finest in southern hospitality, unique shopping and town festivals all set in a historic setting. The quaint town offers a selection of eclectic art galleries, award-winning restaurants, sidewalk cafes, antique shops and clothing boutiques.

Lewisburg is home to one of four Carnegie Halls in the country, while the official state theatre is also located in the centre serving a thriving community which helps its residents create original programs in dance, music, theatre and film. The town offers a range of accommodation, from bed and breakfasts and legendary historic inns.

Set amid the Allegheny Mountains in the Greenbrier Valley which is rich in history and natural beauty, this 221-year-old town houses many 18th and 19th-century buildings..Old structures, converted to new purposes, are still in use, and antebellum homes (often remaining in the same families for generations) are still occupied.

Within five minutes of the historic district, visitorscan travel along the narrow country roads winding through rolling farmlands, over covered bridges, dotted with 19th-century farmhouses and manor houses. The town is located in an area of exceptional beauty with many outdoor recreational opportunities nearby such as the Greenbrier River Trail and the Lost World Caves network.

Lewisburg has also won other accolades: named one of twelve distinctive destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation: recognized as a Top Southern Mountain Town in America and in 1978, a 236-acre area in the heart of Lewisburg was designated a National Register Historic District.
