EXHIBITIONS IN AND AROUND PARIS - 2012

1: Edvard Munch. The modern eye

When: Ends: 9th January 2012

Where: Pompidou Centre

Organised in strict collaboration with the Oslo Munch Museum, the exhibition brings together a palette of major works of the artist, such as has hitherto rarely been seen in France.

Entitled ‘Edvard Munch’, the modern eye’, this project, innovative as well as being scientifically demanding, suggests a dialogue between the 20th century artist’s pictorial work and his interest in the most modern forms of representation: photography, cinema, but equally the contemporary revival of theatrical production.

Often presented as a 19th century symbolist or pre-expressionist painter, Munch is here seen very much as a 20th century artist totally involved in the modernity of his times.

2: CEZANNE, MATISSE, CEZANNE, PICASSO… L’AVENTURE DES STEINS

When: Ends 12th January 2012

Where: Galeries Nationales, Grand Palais

American in origin, the Steins moved to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century.

Early buyers of paintings by Matisse and Picasso, they amassed in their own home artistic works from across the avant-garde spectrum, in so doing bringing together one of the world’s most extraordinary modern art collections.

This exhibition paints a portrait of these extraordinary characters via some 120 masterpieces by Renoir, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, Manguin, Bonnard, Vallotton, Laurencin, Gris, Masson, Picabia etc.

3: Frida Kahlo et Diego Rivera

When: Ends: 16th January 2012

Where: Musée de l’Orangerie

As part of the ‘Year of Mexico’ and for the first time in France, an exhibition is dedicated to the fabled couple represented by Diego Rivera (1886-1957) and Frieda Kahlo (1907-1954).

The exceptional loan of a hundred works by the Dolorès Olmedo Foundation (Mexico) permits a discovery of the universe of these legendary lovers, whose work has become a symbol of the intellectual and artistic effervescence of post-revolutionary Mexico.

The story of Diego and Frieda cannot be dissociated from their faith in art serving revolution. The originality of the exhibition lies in the bringing together of their works, as though confirming the impossibility of their divorce and underlining the profound convergence of their respective universes and creations.

4: In the kingdom of Alexander the Great, ancient Macedonia

When: Ends January 16th

Where: Musée du Louvre

Comprising around five hundred works, some on view to the public for the first time, this exhibition retraces the history of ancient Macedonia from the 15C BC to the time of the Roman Empire.

In particular, it attempts to explain the rise in power of the kingdom of Macedonia against the Greek city-states, with a chronological timeline illustrated by complete funerary displays.

The exhibition’s layout, which is also theme-based, enables visitors to appreciate several aspects of the Macedonian civilisation such as the organisation of its kingdom, artistic production, education, the worlds of both men and women, religion and death.

The exhibition also highlights the development of Macedonia under Roman domination. The last section is dedicated to the genesis of Alexander’s legend in Antiquity.

5: Diane Arbus

When: Ends 5th March 2012

Where: Jeu de Paume

The first retrospective dedicated to Diane Arbus (1923-1971) in France for 30 years.

This exhibition brings together over 200 black and white images by this great American photographer whose work had a profound effect on the development of photographic art.

Diane Arbus took most of her inspiration from New York City, which she saw as both a known territory and a foreign land, and where she would take photographs of strangers in the street.

By mixing the familiar with the bizarre, Diane Arbus paints an unsettling picture of 1960s America.

6: GOUDMALION, HIS LIFE AND WORK – JEAN PAUL GOUDE – A RETROSPECTIVE

When: From 10th November 2011 to 18th March 2012

Where: Musée des Arts décoratifs

The « Arts Décoratifs » museum presents the first ever exhibition in Paris devoted to the work of Jean-Paul Goude.

One of the most brilliant ‘image-makers’ in the world of contemporary artistic creation offers a retrospective and creative view of his work in all the fields that he has exploited: from fashion to photography, from advertising to the live show… The entire scope of his artistic voyage over forty years is set out in the nave of the « Arts Décoratifs » museum, bringing together drawings, objects, music, photography and film.

Conceived of as a major installation, the exhibition naturally contains Goude’s contribution to the bicentenary celebrations of the French Revolution.

Visitors are greeted in the vestibule by one of the monumental electrically propelled “waltzing figures” which made such a sensation in the 1989 parade, while the locomotive used in the same parade will be majestically installed in the ‘great nave’ on a conveyor belt surrounding a host of drawings .
